Sarphatipark In Amsterdam
The Sarphatipark is the best place to escape for a moment from the hectic city life. This small park in Oud Zuid is particularly tranquil. The beautiful park is laid out in English landscape style and is surrounded by grand houses. Due to the enormous growth of Amsterdam in the second half of the 19th century there was a severe shortage of houses for workers. The socially conscious doctor Sarphati initiated the building of a spacious suburb with a park in the middle. Then the city engineer Van Niftrik looked at this practical plan. After he had surveyed the area he produced the final plan.
