Hortus Botanical Garden

The Hortus Amsterdam Botanical Garden is one of the oldest of it's type in the world. In 1682 it was established at it's present location on the eastern edge of the city center, and houses some 6000 varieties of plant life. The outdoor garden is occupied by plants whose natural habitat is temperate or arctic. The Palm House (constructed in 1912) has a collection of cycad palms, one of which is over 300 years old. The Mexican/Californian desert house can be found in the middle section of the garden along with a glass house full of the most beautiful butterflies. The Three Climates Glass House has a subtropical, desert, and a tropical section imitating the jungle and rain forests of South America.
